Poeta, novelista y cuentista estadounidense. Es conocido por su poema narrativo sobre la guerra de Secesión, El cadáver de John Brown (1928, Premio Pulitzer). El volumen de poemas A Book of Americans [Libro de norteamericanos] (1933), escrito a dos manos con su esposa, Rosemary Carr, logró que muchos escolares estadounidenses se familiarizaran con las figuras históricas más importantes de su país. Su cuento "The Devil and Daniel Webster [El diablo y Daniel Webster] (1937) fue la base de una obra teatral e inspiró una ópera de Douglas Moore (estrenada en 1939) y dos películas (1941, 2001).
